Be the first to review

Located 5,500 feet above sea level on a hill facing Gangtok, Rumtek Monastery is the largest monastery in Sikkim. Known for its vibrant murals and sacred art, it is an important center of Tibetan Buddhism.

The four-storied monastery has a large courtyard where traditional lama dances are performed on special occasions. Its golden rooftop ornament represents the five Buddha families. The walls inside are beautifully decorated with paintings of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, saints, and important teachers.

The main hall houses a 10-foot statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, surrounded by smaller golden statues. Sacred Buddhist texts (Kangyur and Tengyur) are also preserved here. Visitors will also find shrine rooms dedicated to Mahakala and Mahakali, protectors of the Kagyu lineage.

Rumtek Monastery is not only a spiritual hub but also an architectural and cultural treasure, attracting pilgrims and travelers from around the world.
